I have spent a lot of time on the Oregon Coast. My soul yearns for it at least a couple of times a year. But I have never spent much time on the south coast, so us the kids and grandkids loaded up the popup and trailer and headed to see what we now know is a stunning coastline!
Our family has property on Garrison Lake, so we had a great place to stay. The view from the property offered lake, sand dune and then ocean views all from the same spot! Enjoy the same view from Paradise RV Village.
First stop was the Crazy Norwegian, located right off the highway and known for great fish and chips. They did not disappoint. Large portions of battered rock fish and crispy chips served in their small dining room or outside at picnic tables. Yumm!
Full and happy we were off to the Prehistoric Gardens. What a cool place! It's an attraction right off of Hwy 101 that has 23 life size concrete dinosaurs amidst a 300 year old temperate rainforest. The kids loved it and so did we. Definitely worth the stop.
Next stop was Cape Blanco lighthouse. There were 40 MPH winds the day we visited which made the hike up quite exciting! Parking lot at the bottom of the hill requires a ten dollar fee per a QR code on the sign. Then it is a bit of a hike up to the lighthouse with its amazing views and gift shop. The volunteers in the gift shop were really nice and very informative. They also were the artists that created some of the items that were for sale.
On the way back to the highway, we stopped to see the historic Hughes house. A 1898 Queen Anne Victorian farmhouse built for Irish pioneers Patrick and Jane Hughes. We had a wonderful tour guide named Pricilla. She was from the area and had actually spent time with the family in the house before it was acquired by the state of Oregon in 1971. She was full of information and a complete joy!
