Oregon’s Hidden Coastal Gem
If your idea of the perfect camping trip includes falling asleep to the sound of crashing waves and waking up just steps from a sandy beach, then Beachside State Recreation Site on Oregon’s Central Coast deserves a spot on your travel list.
Located between Waldport and Yachats along Highway 101, Beachside offers one of the most convenient beachfront camping experiences in Oregon. Unlike many coastal campgrounds where a lengthy walk separates campsites from the ocean, nearly every campsite at Beachside is only a short stroll from the sand.
Arriving at Beachside, you'll immediately notice its relaxed coastal atmosphere. Shore pines and native vegetation provide privacy between campsites, while the Pacific Ocean remains the star attraction. The campground is compact enough to feel welcoming yet spacious enough to avoid feeling crowded.
The best part? You can hear the ocean from almost anywhere in the campground.
Beachside offers both tent camping and RV-friendly sites. Campers can choose from tent sites with nearby water access or sites with electrical and water hookups. There are also yurts available for those who want a little extra comfort without sacrificing the camping experience.
Amenities include:
Flush restrooms
Hot showers
Drinking water
Beach access trails
Picnic tables and fire rings
Hiker/biker camping areas
Firewood available for purchase
The campground operates seasonally, typically from mid-March through the end of October. Reservations are a must, especially during summer months when coastal camping becomes highly popular.
The real reason people camp at Beachside is the beach itself.
A short path through the dunes leads to miles of wide, sandy shoreline perfect for morning walks, beachcombing, kite flying, photography, and sunset watching. During migration seasons, visitors may even spot gray whales offshore. The expansive beach rarely feels crowded, creating a sense of solitude that can be hard to find at more famous Oregon Coast destinations.
One of my favorite moments was stepping onto the beach just before sunset. The sky transformed into shades of orange and pink while waves rolled onto the shore. It was the kind of simple Oregon Coast magic that keeps people coming back year after year.
